Suzie Kerstgens: “Cologne’s doors are always open to everyone”

Suzie Kerstgens is Cologne. Cologne is Suzie Kerstgens. The Klee singer spoke to us about the deep connection she feels with the city and how it came about.

Following a longish break, Rallye reformed in 2002 under the new name of “Klee”. They were pretty much a constant in the noughties in Britpop clubs, which weren’t averse to a bit of German indie pop. “Erinner dich” (2002), “Zwei Fragen” and “Gold” (2004) are melodiously warm “earworms” that have lost none of their charm over the years.

The “Kylie of Cologne” gets quite ecstatic when she talks about her home town. “I made Cologne my adopted home because I love the place!” she says. “Because Cologne’s doors are always open to everyone. People are close to one another, they share their laughter and their tears.” The Eigelstein quarter is her place to be and she’s in awe of what it’s become – a popular place oozing a charm of its own, a place to meet up and go out instead of the concrete dreariness of yesteryear.

For a long time, Ebertplatz was a pretty drab affair but it’s undergone something of a metamorphosis in the past few years.
