If you’re heading for Kebapland after the final whistle, make sure you’re not too hungry as it’s not uncommon for the queue to reach as far as the next corner! After all, nowhere else in Cologne does kebabs, grilled meat and the other classics as delicious as the food here. You’ll recognise the place from afar thanks to the white smoke rising out of the chimney. Once you see that, you can be sure everything will be ok – no matter how the match ends.

After a close game, the best thing to eat to calm your nerves is a good square (well, roundish) meal – in the shape of potato fritters, or Rievkooche as they’re known locally. You can get really scrumptious ones at this popular, no-frills place near Heumarkt. Made fresh by hand and served with a wide variety of sources, these Rievkooche are a true delicacy.

4. Das Brüsseler – super sandwiches

Footie in the Belgian Quarter with a stop to pick up some yummy rotisserie-style chicken on the way. And Das Brüsseler does one of the best. They also have an impressive range of sandwiches with lashings of cheese and, for the carnivores out there, piles of chicken. Grab a portion of fries to complete your meal and you’ll be in a good mood whatever happens in the stadium (almost).

They have Belgian-style fries, which are extra thick, made from fresh potatoes and fried twice, plus a fine selection of sauces. After all, Germany’s direct neighbours are unbeatable – at least when it comes to fries!
