Picture this: you’re by a lake, savouring the last bit of sun and the first beats of the evening. Or you’re meandering through streets, exploring the fusion of creative minds and awe-inspiring artists. That’s exactly what you can expect during Cologne’s 2025 festival summer. Pop culture and critical art, great music and even greater company will combine to create memories you’ll cherish for some time to come. Read on to discover what inspirational highlights Cologne has on offer this year.
c/o pop: pop culture in Ehrenfeld
When rapper Apsilon plays two exclusive shows as the opening act of a festival, you know you’re in for something special. To make sure you don’t miss out, head to Cologne’s c/o pop Festival in the city’s Ehrenfeld neighbourhood, where events will include a concert by Alli Neumann, a reading by Instagram phenomenon sveamaus and an erotic performance by queer collective Magic Dyke*. The festival is famous as a launchpad for underground artists who’ve gone on to make it big. Like Ski Aggu – a newcomer in 2023 and now selling out huge venues. What artist will surprise us this year? Only one way to find out…
Launched in 2004, c/o pop is a music festival and convention rolled into one. With its broad mix of formats and great opportunities for networking and chatting to like-minded people about Cologne’s creative scene and the latest trends in pop culture, c/o pop creates a real sense of community. It’s also fantastic to see that c/o pop always incorporates FLINTA (female, lesbian, inter, non-binary, trans and agender) and LGBTQIA+- artists as a normal part of the line-up. You’ll see acts such as Futurebae, Ray Lozano and Zsá Zsá take the stage along with queer DJ collectives and international indie newcomers.
c/o pop is all about musical diversity but responsibility is an important aspect too. With its on-site awareness team and clear rules, the festival makes sure everyone feels safe – no matter what their gender, ethnicity, physical capabilities or sexual orientation. On top of that, many of the venues have wheelchair access and there are special, “safer spaces” too.
Rather than taking place in a fenced-off festival field, Cologne’s c/o pop is a living part of the neighbourhood, with clubs, courtyards, record stores, parks and cafés all becoming stages. What’s really nice is that a lot of the events are free and open to anyone who wants to drop by. The three-day tickets are already sold out but, luckily, there are still one-day tickets to be had. So you’ll need to be quick…
Where? Various locations in and around Venloer Straße.
When? 23-27 April 2025
How much? Day tickets for the festival cost 35 euros, tickets for the convention are from
44 euros. You can get admission to both – from Thursday to Saturday – for 149 euros.
Sommerblut Kulturfestival: on the courage to take new paths
One look at the Sommerblut Kulturfestival website and you know straight away that creative minds are involved. The design makes it obvious but so do the topics – the aim of the festival is to shift political and cultural issues into the spotlight, promote societal debate and share ideas.
But what does that actually mean? Every year, Sommerblut explores the peripheries of what can be said, seen and felt – through drama, dance, performance, art, literature, music and a multitude of things that can’t be put in any particular category (yet). Look forward to a varied, experimental programme. The queer-feminist performance “She doesn’t look her age”, for instance, invites audiences to contemplate the myth of the fountain of youth and people’s longing for immortality. And the project “un_unterbrochen” blends film screenings, a city tour and a panel debate to take a closer look at media coverage of right-wing violence.
Sommerblut takes accessibility seriously and has made it an integral part of the festival experience. Audio description, sign language interpreting and wheelchair accessibility all ensure that people with disabilities and neurodivergent people can enjoy the event.
A tip from us: some of the locations are small, alternative venues that you’d never go to normally – a real opportunity to discover underground locations and projects.
Where? Various places around the city.
When? 30 April – 11 May 2025
How much? The ticketing system for Sommerblut is based on a pay-as-you-can approach. People who haven’t got much money don’t have to pay as much. They can get in for six euros. And some of the events, like the “Festival of Religions”, are completely free. The standard price for an evening at Sommerblut is 17 euros.
Photoszene Festival: original, urban, critical
Mid-May will see photographers from around the world descend on Cologne once again as global photo art and the pulsating life of the city’s streets meet at the Photoszene Festival. As well as showcasing spectacular visuals, this festival sets out to promote debate between artists, locals and visitors. Inspiring interactions develop in the festival’s various settings, from urban galleries to out-of-the-ordinary spots surrounded by the bustling city.
But the festival isn’t just about admiring pictures – it’s an opportunity to reflect, participate in critical assessment and think about how photography can address and have an impact on social issues. It kicks off with an opening event at Museum Ludwig on 16 May. All of the exhibiting artists, curators and collectives will be on hand to talk about their work.
Where? Throughout Cologne.
When? 16 May – 15 June 2025
How much? Admission to most of the exhibitions and events is free. There might be an admission charge for some things though so it’s a good idea to check the details in the festival’s official programme.
ILLU25: illustrating talent from Cologne and the surrounding region
The four-day ILLU25 festival will place the focus squarely on the art of illustration. While local artists will showcase their wide range of works and the skills behind them, workshops and tours will give visitors to the carefully curated exhibitions a chance to find out more about the artistic process.
But the best news is that many of the illustrations are available to buy from the ILLU25 shop – in the form of products like posters, books, shirts and postcards. So make sure you’ve got some money on you – you’ll kick yourself otherwise!
Where? Michael Horbach Stiftung on Wormser Straße 23, 50677 Cologne (Südstadt district)
When? 19-22 June 2025
How much? They haven’t announced the ticket prices for 2025 yet. Tickets for the 2023 edition cost 5 euros per person.
Summerjam Festival: good times by the lake
Grab your shades, get your gang together and get ready for the ultimate summer jam feeling when Fühlinger See lake becomes a mecca of music from 4 to 6 July. From reggae to dancehall and afrobeats to hip-hop – international top acts, newcomers and underground legends create an experience you’ll never forget. Dance barefoot in the water while Albi X heats up the stage, or chill, cocktail in hand, to the softer sounds of Max Herre and Joy Denalane.
The Summerjam Festival is multifaceted and goes back a long way. In fact, it’s one of the oldest and largest reggae festivals in Europe. It started out in 1986 at the Loreley open-air theatre near Sankt Goarshausen, moved to Wildenrath airfield in 1994 and finally found a permanent home, two years later, at Fühlinger See lake in Cologne – thankfully! Today, around 30,000 visitors come every year to enjoy the friendly atmosphere and unparalleled reggae vibes.
Whilst music is the main focus here, you’ll also find mouth-watering street food, creative workshops and a huge market where you’re guaranteed to snap up stylish gems like works of art or merchandise from your favourite artists.
Handy hint: You can camp right on the lakeshore and immerse yourself in the adventure that is Summerjam. Whether you’re a reggae fan or just want to enjoy summer to the full – this is where you want to be!
Where? Fühlinger See lake, Cologne
When? 4-6 July 2025
How much? Tickets for this three-day festival cost just under 180 euros. If you want to camp on site too, you pay an extra 43 euros.
Eat Play Love: wakeboarding meets electro beats
Looking for the perfect weekend to mark the end of summer 2025? Then put a big, fat circle around 4 to 7 September in your diary because that’s when the Eat Play Love Festival will be heading back to Cologne’s Fühlinger See Lake!
Look forward to four days packed full of action, beats and culinary delights – right on the waterfront. Electronic sounds from international DJs will get you dancing while food trucks serve up authentic cuisine from across the globe. The highlight of the festival is the wakeboarding competitions. Past years have seen European championships and other major tournaments staged here. In 2025, Europe’s top wakeboarders will be back again to demonstrate their skill on the lake’s regatta course.
The festival is also big on sustainability, community and responsibility – ideal for anyone who prefers a festival experience that isn’t just about partying and wants to see out the summer in a feel-good atmosphere. Another key aspect at Eat Play Love is inclusion. People with physical or mental disabilities can ask for a “buddy” to help make things easier for them. On top of that, admission is completely free for people with disabilities – as it is for children up to and including the age of 12. With a dedicated kids’ area, featuring attractions like bouncy castles, jam sessions and face painting, Eat Play Love is a great place for families too.
