Taha Mode-Design is about fashion you see – and fashion you don’t. At her atelier in Cologne, Demet Taha designs gowns and summer dresses as well as underwear and lingerie. Lace-trimmed negligées with matching robes, balcony bras, fringed stoles and concertina pleat tops – they’re all on display at her two boutiques in the city’s Belgian Quarter. Using fine fabrics from German, Swiss, French and Italian producers, she creates underwear, swimwear and outer garments at her workshop on Moltkestraße, right next to her lingerie boutique. Her other boutique is on Venloer Straße. Demet is also a trained men’s tailor and Taha Mode-Design expanded its range in 2018 to include fashion for men who like to look good and like their clothes to look good too.
An international success – fashion from the ateliers of Cologne
For Corinna and Ivonne, setting up IVI Collection was a dream come true. Their self-appointed mission is to design silk, cotton and linen garments that flatter the feminine shape as in the silk trousers and blouse outfit that sits so perfectly on our model. Now counting 200 pieces and sold in ten countries, the collection runs the gamut from elegant to casual. The centrepiece is a top with a comfortable cut and clear lines. All of the prints and knits are developed by the designers in their atelier in Cologne’s trendy Belgian Quarter.
IVI Collection also design canine accessories. Dog blankets, collars and treat bags to add a splash of colour and style when you’re out and about with your four-legged friend.
Playful designs made in Cologne
From their atelier in Cologne, Nina Hempel and Moni Wallberg of Blauer Montag design and make clothes and accessories with a fine eye for detail – including the crocheted blouson and matching bag in the photo shoot. These are designers who enjoy their work – and it shows. A combination of style, quality and playful, eye-catching elements.
Their shop also stocks legwear made in Cologne by fashion designer and screen printer Meike Diedeling. With their elegant, distinctive designs, her socks, stockings and tights complement Hempel & Wallberg’s garments perfectly.
Making a statement with fashion from Cologne
Oh April is another label driven by powerful women who love their craft. Founder Carmen Kroll’s rib-knit trousers and classic trouser suit not only combine comfy clothing with timeless design – with an 80% female workforce producing each garment by hand, this is fashion that makes a statement. The production companies Oh April works with are family-owned, small and medium-sized businesses, some of which have been making clothes for three generations.
When it comes to sustainability and fashion, Cologne native Carmen feels you can’t have one without the other. And that goes for how the products get to the customer too. She already uses 100% recycled packaging and is looking to replace the product care labels with sustainable alternatives made of recycled paper or organic cotton.
Tailor-made outfits
You’ll find sustainable clothing at L-Gabrielle too, with fair-fashion outfits made by hand in two ateliers near Cologne. Twice a year, Gabriele Koch designs a new classic, feminine collection and presents it at a show in the city’s Altstadt district. Afterwards, customers can have the pieces tailored to their measurements – free of charge. Because L-Gabrielle is all about elegant fashion for the individual. By the way, in case you were wondering, the “L” stands for love, laughter, luxury and lots more but it’s also meant to be read as “elle” – fashion for her.
In the heart of Cologne’s Klettenberg neighbourhood, Andrea Droemont creates tailor-made day, evening and bridal wear. All of the pieces are designed, cut and lovingly hand-crafted in her atelier. Andrea also passes on her knowledge of traditional tailoring skills to the younger generation and has repeatedly received prizes for her work to train young people.
Over a century of fashion from Cologne
Cologne legend DIEFENTHAL1905 supplies hats and caps for every occasion. The great-grandfather of the current manager, Pia Diefenthal, was already providing hats to the ladies and gentlemen of Cologne more than a hundred years ago. Today, four generations later, the company enjoys continued success, producing a small, select range that follows fashion trends without losing sight of its own history. Taking classics like caps, fedoras, Panama hats and bowlers, they re-interpret them, drawing on the hat-making skills they’ve amassed over the decades. And, of course, each item contains a visible nod to their home city – the hem of the sweatband inside is edged in red and white, the colours of Cologne.
