New Year’s Eve in Cologne: Ideas for the night and the morning after

Cologne offers plenty of ways to step into 2026 with a bang. We’ve got five ideas to make the big night one you won’t forget.

Cologne – the city with arguably the most beautiful skyline on the Rhine – has a lot in store for this New Year’s Eve. Whether you’re heading out partying, wandering the streets with friends, raising a quiet toast somewhere cosy or starting the new year with a wellness break, you’ll have no trouble finding the right spot. And we’ve got five ideas to turn the big night into something truly memorable.

Tip #1: Kick off the night with a bar crawl

Kicking off your New Year’s Eve with a bar crawl? Absolutely spot on.

  • Ease into the night at the bar Im Schnörres. Sitting on Dreikönigenstrasse in the Südstadt, it’s the go-to spot for a laid-back vibe and expertly mixed drinks. A smooth way to start into the night.
  • Next up: Ehrenfeld. Aim for Königsblut on Thebäerstrasse or Der Schwarze Hase on Heliosstrasse. Königsblut scores with creative cocktails and fire-red walls that give the place a wonderfully atmospheric glow. Bonus: you can book a table for two or for a big group. Insider tip: bring cash – they don’t take cards.
  • Just a few minutes’ walk away you’ll find Der Schwarze Hase – a different vibe, but every bit as distinctive. Here, cocktail-making is very much a craft. And if you need a little energy boost: many swear the best espresso martini in town is poured here. At weekends – and of course on New Year’s Eve – DJs set the mood.

  • Last but not least: Elektra Musikbar on Gereonswall in the Eigelstein district. Step straight into the 50s and 60s: wood-panelled walls, subtle lighting and a distinctly mid-century vibe. A brilliant place to soak up the décor and meet new people. Perfect for seeing out the year.

Tip #2: Ring in the New Year at these clubs

Had a few drinks, spirits are high, midnight’s approaching – now you need the right club to dance your way into the New Year. Here are our top party spots for New Year’s Eve 2025.

Gebäude 9: A music mix that feels like an adventure

Sixties, indie, Britpop, sixties soul & mod, northern soul and full-on floorshaker party sounds – you’ll get the whole mix at Gebäude 9 in Deutz at the FLOORSHAKER SILVESTER INFERNO. If this eclectic blend sounds like an adventure, it’s one you should definitely try. Tickets for the Floorshaker Silvester Inferno currently go for 23 euros.

King Georg: The iconic jazz bar at Ebertplatz

On the other side of the Rhine you’ll also find great party spots, for example King Georg at Ebertplatz, known for its legendary jazz nights and intimate atmosphere. It fills up quickly, so best not turn up five minutes before midnight.

Jaki at Stadtgarten: NYE line-up still secret – but it’ll be good

One neighbourhood over lies Jaki, a hip little space that really comes alive on New Year’s Eve. Expect jazz, hip hop, soul, electronic beats and reggae. The exact line-up is still under wraps – but you can count on it being a great night.

Schrotty in Ehrenfeld: NYE rave on two floors

Techno fans should definitely have Schrotty in Ehrenfeld on their list. The Silvester Rave – the club’s big NYE party – delivers danceable beats across two floors, though the DJ line-up hasn’t been revealed yet. Tickets for the Silvester Rave are available online for 25 euros. Better grab one before they’re gone.

Tip #3: Escape the crowds on Mont Klamott

Not in the mood for big crowds at midnight? Then head up Mont Klamott, as locals lovingly call the Herkulesberg, a twenty-five-metre artificial hill. From the pedestrian bridge you’ll get a unique view of the Cologne skyline. A few minutes before midnight, just pull out the bubbly and the glasses from your backpack and toast to the New Year.

Tip #4: Blow away the cobwebs with a New Year’s stroll along the Rhine

A fresh breeze and water stretching out in front of you – for many Cologne locals, the classic New Year’s Day walk follows the Rhine.

If you’re near the Südbrücke, stroll south towards the Kölsche Riviera near Rodenkirchen. Why not start the New Year at the beach?

Or head the other way, towards the city centre. Just follow the water past the Südbrücke, the hospitals and the Chocolate Museum all the way to the Bastion.

A quieter alternative is a walk through Melaten Cemetery. With more than 55,000 graves spread across 435,000 square metres, it’s the largest cemetery in Cologne. Over many decades, people from all walks of life have been laid to rest here, rich and poor alike. Wealthier families built monumental tombs where you can trace two centuries of art history. You may even spot the final resting places of Cologne personalities like Willi Ostermann, Dirk Bach or the Farina family, who invented Eau de Cologne.

If you’re more in the mood for contemporary art, take a wander through Ehrenfeld, where you can spot plenty of murals. The neighbourhood is known for its urban art including the work “Matriarchy” on Vogelsanger Strasse 197, the Edelweißpiraten mural on Schönsteinstrasse 1a and “Fallen Angel” on Hackländerstrasse 2, which shows two figures with bags over their heads.

Tip #5: Chill and stick to those New Year’s resolutions

If you want to start the year with good intentions, you might begin with the six-kilometre running route that starts at Aachener Weiher and loops through the inner green belt.

Or take it a little easier: Neptunbad in Ehrenfeld is open until midnight on the 1st of January. Opened in 1912 as Cologne’s first public bath, it still charms with its art-nouveau look. There’s plenty to help you unwind: how about meditative underwater music, a session in the historic sauna or a soothing massage?

Whichever way you spend your New Year’s Eve and the morning after we say: Happy New Year!
