Extraordinary locations, beautifully curated stalls and a vibe far from the mainstream – Cologne’s alternative Christmas markets blend creativity, sustainability and plenty of local charm. We’ve picked five with the potential to become the highlights of your Advent. Perfect for anyone who loves to discover new things and soak up the festive atmosphere.
1. Christmas G’art’en: Cologne’s laid-back Christmas market
If you’re into design and art, Christmas G’art’en at the old Wachsfabrik site, a former candle factory turned creative hub, is your go-to. Exhibitors showcase handmade pieces, unusual gift ideas and sustainable inspiration for a greener Christmas. The focus is on quality, attention to detail and environmental awareness
Feeling peckish? There’s plenty to nibble on – from sweet to savoury, plus the must-have mug of mulled wine.
Tip: on 13 December at 8 pm, right after the first market day, the team hosts a cosy living-room concert. Well worth sticking around for after all that browsing and tasting.
Wachsfabrik, Industriestrasse 170, 50999 Cologne-Rodenkirchen
13 December, 2 – 10 pm; 14 December, 2 – 8 pm
Free entry
2. Super Christmas Market: fair, sustainable and handmade
Who says love and shopping can’t team up at Christmas? The sustainable Super Christmas Market at Bürgerhaus Stollwerck proves they can.
Around sixty local designers showcase innovative pieces spanning fashion, interiors, ceramics and jewellery – all fair, sustainable and handmade. Just as special: the homemade foodie delights made from organic ingredients.
Bürgerhaus Stollwerck, Dreikönigenstrasse 23, 50678 Cologne-South
6 & 7 December, 11 am – 7 pm
Admission €5
3. “Veihnachtsmarkt”: Cologne’s all-vegan Christmas market
A mindful Advent without animal products: the Veihnachtsmarkt is Cologne’s very first vegan Christmas market. Expect creative bites like vegan Flammkuchen (a crisp, pizza-style flatbread) Käsespätzle (German-style mac and cheese) and golden waffles, plus apple and cherry punch served with style. On the last three Advent weekends, Steinmetzstrasse 57 turns into a meet-up spot for vegans and the vegan-curious. There’s also a creative market and live performances to round off the vibe.
Steinmetzstrasse 57, 51103 Cologne-Kalk
5 – 7, 12 – 14 and 19 – 21 December; Fridays 4 – 9 pm, Saturdays 12 – 9 pm, Sundays 12 – 8 pm
Free entry
4. Hof-Weihnachtsmarkt on Körnerstraße: Cologne’s neighbourly Advent edition
Among locals, Körnerstrasse is known as Ehrenfeld’s answer to Lindenstrasse, Germany’s very own version of Coronation Street, a real community street where people know each other, lend a hand and even throw street festivals together.
That same neighbourhood spirit gave birth to the Hof-Weihnachtsmarkt, a courtyard Christmas market that brings the local community out into their gardens, courtyards and driveways. Wander from yard to yard, browse private flea-market stalls and soak up the cosy atmosphere. Local shops, cafés and residents serve up homemade treats and hot drinks.
Körnerstrasse, 50823 Cologne-Ehrenfeld
6 & 7 December
Free entry
5. Winter Market at CBE: for family & friends
Between the red-brick arches of CBE (Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld), where basslines usually thump through the night and neon lights flicker, December flips the switch: copper kettles instead of cocktails, fairy lights instead of strobes, and the scent of cinnamon and roasted almonds in the air. Soft beats drift from the speakers while local designers present their work. Add tasty street food and a family-friendly line-up, and the CBE Winter Market becomes the perfect spot for an after-work wind-down or a laid-back Advent weekend.
Bartholomäus-Schink-Strasse 65/67, Cologne-Ehrenfeld
until 23 December, daily 5 pm – midnight; Saturdays & Sundays 2 pm – midnight
Free entry
