Fair fashion from Cologne – big on sustainability AND on colour

Cologne is Germany's capital when it comes to sustainable and ethical fashion. It's a fact fashionistas have known about for a long time. The city has numerous fair fashion designers and big-name flagship stores. It's also a vibrant place so it seems only natural to feature vibrant outfits.

Let’s be honest: excessive clothes shopping isn’t going to stop any time soon. People are far too convinced it’s normal to pay 9 euros for a T-shirt. But awareness is changing as more and more consumers wake up to the fact that the price on the tag doesn’t reflect the true cost of making the garment. Production conditions are often precarious and the wages and safety standards in the factories low. And then there’s the huge impact on the climate due to the resources and processing needed to manufacture fast fashion. In response, fair fashion has transitioned from a mere statement to a full-blown trend.

Cologne – Germany’s fair fashion capital

Cologne is home to a multitude of labels that are contributing to this movement. Green fashion brands have flagship stores here, and fantastic shops like Het Kollektief (where you’ll always find a magical surprise) can be found on the city’s shopping streets.

We’ve already featured six of the labels – they were all part of the fashion shoot for our “K wie Köln” magazine. Along with lots more. This time, we’ve included some extravagant second-hand pieces from Kleiderei one of Cologne’s many jam-packed vintage stores.

Eco fashion can really bring on the colour – take a look for yourself!

We met up with photographer Tobias Kruse for a fashion shoot at 25 Hours Hotel The Circle – itself a blaze of colour and the perfect place for our mission. As well as celebrating the rise of fair fashion, we wanted to show that the days of beige linen skirts and grey knitted jumpers being all eco fashion has to offer (if that were ever true) are well and truly over.

The green Cologne labels worn by our model Miriam Jeng are proof that fair fashion can have a really vibrant vibe. But then, what else would you expect in Cologne?
